Hair Loss – Straight from the Heart

Studies made by researchers from the Harvard Medical School, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital have concluded that male pattern baldness is linked to an increased risk of heart disease. The study concluded that the greater the loss of hair, the higher the risk for heart disease.

Men with no hair loss were used as the baseline. In comparison to them, the men of the same age who were losing hair from the front of the head with thinning at the crown had a 9 percent increase in heart conditions such as chest pains or angina, nonfatal heart attacks, and procedures such as angioplasty and bypass surgery to open blocked coronary arteries. For men whose hair loss is on the top, the risk jumps to 23 percent. Continue reading

Causes of Hair Loss in Women

Women have certain hormones in their bodies like oestrogen or testosterone; these hormones are sometimes produced immoderately or their production is decreased. In turn, certain changes in the body can result to hair loss. A great example of this is when a woman gives birth to a baby. When this occurs, her hormones can enter a resting phase while the body returns to its pre-pregnancy condition. During this period, typically three to six months after giving birth, she may start to notice an increase in hair shedding.
